Yuka and Ohatsu (who was only two on the day of the gembaku) are living on in Hiroshima- little sister Ohatsu who shrinks from anything which is unsightly is now going to have a baby, to please her husband. Yuka had lost hers and now briefly goes to Tokyo where she falls in love with an American and thinks of starting again. But she is recalled home after Ohatsu gives birth to a monstrous baby, the strange fruit of the flowers and seeds....

Underneath the rather porcelainized prettiness of the prose, the message war...thats an obsolete word for ENDLIFE is ineradicable.
